×Thermal Stress and Strain
AERO GATE TOPPER
1. A steel bar is fixed at both ends and experiences a temperature rise of 50°C. The coefficient of thermal expansion is 12 × 10⁻⁶ /°C and the modulus of elasticity is 200 GPa. Calculate the thermal stress developed in the bar (in MPa). Use whole numbers only.
2. What happens to the thermal stress in a material if it is heated while being completely constrained?
3. Which factors influence the thermal stress developed in a constrained material?
4. A metal rod with a coefficient of thermal expansion of 12 × 10⁻⁶ /°C experiences a temperature increase of 100°C. Calculate the thermal strain. Use four decimal places.
5. A steel bar is constrained at both ends and experiences a temperature drop. Which type of stress is generated in the bar?
6. Which material properties influence the amount of thermal stress generated in a constrained structure?
7. A copper bar with a coefficient of thermal expansion of 16 × 10⁻⁶ /°C is constrained at both ends and undergoes a temperature drop of 30°C. If the modulus of elasticity is 120 GPa, calculate the compressive thermal stress generated in the bar (in MPa). Use whole numbers only.
8. What will happen to the thermal stress in a material if it is free to expand or contract during temperature changes?
9. Which of the following factors contribute to the combined strain in a material subjected to both mechanical and thermal loading?
10. A steel rod of length 2 meters is subjected to a temperature increase of 50°C. The coefficient of thermal expansion for steel is 12 × 10⁻⁶ /°C. Calculate the change in length (in mm). Use whole numbers only.
11. Which of the following is a consequence of thermal stress in a constrained material?
12. Which factors affect the thermal strain in a material subjected to temperature change?
13. What is the direct relationship between stress (σ) and strain (ε) in the elastic region of a material?
14. Which of the following are correct expressions for strain energy (U) in a material subjected to stress (σ) and strain (ε)?
15. How is thermal strain (ε) related to the temperature change (ΔT) and coefficient of thermal expansion (α)?
16. Which of the following relations involve Young’s modulus (E) and the coefficient of thermal expansion (α)?
